Juana Change (Mae Parner) is a Tagala Comedienne and social activist whose skits on YouTube may provide the class with both a laugh and a launching point for discussions on the significance of Jose Rizal. The examples given are only that. There are many ways that the skits could be incorporated into your class presentations. Your imagination is your only limitation. Bayani
You might use the sit "Bayani"
to think about the life of modern day OFWs (Overseas Foreign Workers) to
compare and contrast with Rizal who went to Europe (and elsewhere) under the
prompting of his brother Paciano with the primary focus of bringing back
something of worth; it was not to profit himself or the Mercado family but
to benefit the Philippine motherland.
Baligtaran
During the time of Rizal many
people proclaimed that the Philippines could never prosper. Filipinos
were, by nature, lazy people and would always remain uncultured. They
were not "suited" to be educated or given leadership positions. The
Friars, especially, promoted this viewpoint in Europe and at home.
Compare this with Rizal who believed in the worth of each and every
Filipino. This could be used as a launching point for a discussion of
"The Indolence of the Filipino."
Rowbaht
The Reformers, including Rizal, spent their
energies trying to give the Philippines a voice in the Spanish parliament,
the Cortez. Rizal had a unique viewpoint believing that Filipinos
needed to be "worthy" by means of education and critical thinking to
practice their citizenship. Let this be a starting point in discussing the
political life of the Philippines today and move toward the ideals of the
Reformers in the nineteenth century. Be sure to include Rizal's
concept of a "worthy" citizen.
Kulungan
Jose Rizal as with Reformers before and after
him have suffered imprisonment, exile, and death because they spoke the
truth about injustice in the motherland. There are plenty of examples
of injustice in Rizal's writings; the martyrdom of Rizal shows his supreme
sacrifice for the love he had for his country. Use this to
compare and contrast the real criminals of today and of that time sometimes
spoken of as the golden age of nationalism in the late nineteenth
century.
