Only very recently am I dedicating my mind into promoting the beautiful and positive side of the Philippines by way of art designs. Having skimmed the life of Dr. Rizal and later read the above novels, I find the above study to be quite interesting. However the study ends abruptly with the discussion of the creoles of which Senator Richard Gordon is one. Therefore, I am wondering how the Quezons, the Roxas, the Aquinos, the Osmenas, the Estradas, and other such families were able to become such political and social strengths in the country? Since i was young I really do love reading and listening facts about my national hero Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda.I adore him because of his famous writing "Sa Aking mga Kababata early at the age of 3 or 5 if i am not mistaken.One of his famous and outrageous writing that has been penned is "Noli mi Tangere" and the "El Filibusterismo" which struck me as a Filipino.I am so proud of him and i will always remember him as my hero for he gave his life as a sacrifice for his sick and dying mother country.Actually i got flat one (1.00) in my subject in Rizal or the "Life and Writings of Rizal" because of my dedication and interest in his life.For that a million thanks to you my beloved "Pepe".

I am interested to the life and writings of Rizal especially "The Philippines, a century hence" because we are at the brink of 2010 elections. I want to know the thoughts of the man whether what he saw into the future, parallel that of today. I also want to read his views regarding that which propels man into his identity, his being and his destination, which is his spirit.

Rulers, times, places have changed and the evidence of subjugation still manifest in the way of thinking and living for most of Filipinos. Subjugation in the sense that people aren't able to identify why they think that way, hence why they act that way. Some of the striking writings of Rizal point to the very core of this condition. Freedom is priceless. Freedom that is so close, yet unknown to many. The religiosity of the Filipinos provide a clear evidence on this. Every election season may provide a watershed for any nation. In our case, it's whether to stay this way, or to hope another man's way. For if only to realize our identity and our destiny, we must now face and accept the very offering of freedom, not from oppression nor from subjugation, but by freedom given to every man in the face of this beautiful earth by the death and life of Jesus Christ who frees us from this sinful nature, from this decaying world, which really corrupts every man, great and small, emperors and peasants, presidents and citizens alike. Only by understanding the love of the living God, can we face our "enemies" and defeat poverty, stand up to any ruler, whether they wear long garments such as those of the pharisees and priests or that of people referred to in congress as "men of honor" or those who threaten by guns and swords, that there is a God who offered His Son to free us from ignorance, poverty and sin not just to provide good life in heaven but "to see His goodness in this present life". Thus like what Rizal, Ninoy and similarly other saints who came to know the grace of Jesus can we have a new spirit to receive the glory of freedom and abundance. Only through this man named Jesus, the Lord of all Lords can we now stand up and face our destiny that we are after all free.

I visited Manila and the museum dedicated to Jose Rizal...I saw his writings, and scultures, and paintings, his statements inscribed on pillars. The writing was brilliant, and spoke as eloquently to problems with indigenous people and colonizers today as it did to the same issues then. I saw his surgical instruments and I marveled that this young man was so gifted and accomplished. The nephew of the lady I rented a condo from had brought me to this palce because I wanted to understand some history of the Philippines...he had told me the statue was of the PI national hero, and simply said that he was a doctor...I didn't know anything else but what I was seeing in the room where his works of art, literature, and medical tools were displayed..I noticed something about him being in prison..so after I had looked, and read, and marveled, and we were leaving the room I asked my kind guide, "So, what happened when he got out of prison?" He looked at me, surprised I did not know and said, "Oh-they executed him"...just then we walked into the room where there is a mural of his death, as he falls (but not face down)to the firing squad, and I just cried...I bought the Noli there, and The Filibusterismo, and the story of his life, and death and read them...I wondered about what contributions he would have made had he lived, even as I contemplated the impact of his death, his martyrdom, on those who sought freedom from oppression...I live in Hawaii, teach and work and volunteer with Filipinos, and I feel that insight into a national hero is part of insight into a national character, helps one to understand shared values.

Even before I started formal schooling, my teacher uncle had taught me to memorize Rizal's poem -- "Sa Aking Mga Kababata." Through elementary and high school, I have always espoused the wisdom of developing and propagating our native language. When I started writing to newspaper editors in the 1960s, the necessity of developing and propagating our national language had always been among my earnest endeavors. In the Manila Chronicle issue sometime in June of 1970, columnist Celso Cabrera poked fun at my one-man demonstration within the Malacañang offices for the development, promotion and propagation of our national language. When my superiors in office sent me as a Colombo Plan fellow to London in January 1975, I realized later that it was a tricky ruse to stop my efforts in promoting the national language. When President Magsaysay perished from a plane crash -- in analyzing the mystery, I feel convinced that his having ordered the translation of the English Philippine National Anthem to Lupang Hinirang; his order to change the English military commands into Filipino; and his having instituted the practice of accepting the credentials of newly accredited envoys to the Philippines in delivering his official response in the native language -- all these contributed to his being eliminated from the position of national leadership. When Mr. Ferdinand E, Marcos issued on 17 January 1986 his memorandum to the Minister of Education and Culture, and all other members of the Cabinet -- "to create the conditions in your respective ministries and other instrumentalities of the government for the optimal promotion and development of Filipino as national language... etc." The EDSA One uprising was a deep CIA cover to thwart the Marcos memorandum; and so, after more than a month afterwards, Mr. Marcos was abducted by the US Marines, courtesy of the US CIA, and detained him in Hawaii until his death. I simply wish and I endeavor to adhere to the admoniitions of Dr. Jose Rizal, concerning language, as succintly elucidated in the discourses between Simoun and Basilio in the Seventh Chapter of El Filibusterismo.

I was really flabbergasted when someone demanded to stop discussions on language in this forum! I see in such a proposition the sinister ploy from the World Bank-IMF position to prolong, if not perpetuate the English language preponderance in all government institutions, and in all socio-cultural developments in the Philippines. The Philippine Constitution was drafted and retified 21 years ago. It is a great wonder why the provisions on language, particularly in SECTIONS 6 and 7 of ARTICLE XIV thereof, have not been implemented. And the President, supported by many legislators who were with her retinue during their recent visit to the USA, persists with the TREASONOUS move to return the English language to the educational system, and back to the classrooms. Can our countrymen support this position: to develop, promote and propagate the use of our national language in the conduct of government and in educational institutions? To suppress the development and propagation of our national language is an act of treason by our government leaders. I humbly submit.

Because I came across it by accident and got to read his poem MI ULTIMO ADIOS and it brought me to tears... I read a summary of his biography from an encyclopedia and my heart reaches out to such hero. I would love to learn more about him.

I don't see why there is a controversy to whether or not he was the nation's hero. The fact that some claim his devotion wasn't complete because he didn't use or incite violence is not well-founded. I believe that the life he lived when in exile helped him cleared his mind. Just the fact that he grew closer to the earth by doing agriculture and helping the youth and educating the people... all those things would have make him see how blood-shed wasn't the answer. Honestly, I'm not interested in this site. I know Dr. Jose Rizal was indeed one example of a unique many splendored species in the world that happens to be our national hero. However he is not my chosen hero, though Rizal is witty enough to be considered, but. I keep dreaming of things related to him. The rich Spanis man whom Dr. Jose Rizal stayed in Spain. The 18th century happenings that I was about to be raped and the last dream over six months ago that I was on my way to Calamba, Laguna. After dreaming of him I became a member of poets.com (workshop) wher my writing has greatly improved and I was able to write over 400 prose and poetry. My book "The Messages" miscellaneous prose and poetry by Laureana Cacho Sheppard published by the London Press (424 pages). My dreams about Dr. Jose Rizal are in this book. i actually prefered bonifacio as a deserving one to be the national hero of the philippines as i read some articles about his (bonifacio) patriotism and his writings as well. i realized that bonifacio is not that so rebellios minded as i perceive him before, rather, he is also a very intellegent man, infact, he has so many patriotic and meaningful wrtings that are so significant to evry filipino's life...if we are talking about the intellegence , the braveness, and patriotism, bonifacio is indeed, the most appropriate one.. im not suggesting or opposing the fact that rizal (as our national hero), its just that, i wanna know the characteristics of rizal that bonifacio didnt have..maybe, the reason why i cant appreciate rizal that much is because i am less knowledgable about him...la lang! :D

The topic our group would like to focus is Rizal's childhood. Our group paid a visit to his house in Calamba, Laguna, where we learned a lot of things not written in textbooks. Young Pepe had a nanny! During the research, things got more and more interesting to me. And so, I even explored sites in the Internet dedicated to our concern.

My grand daughter currently lives in the Philippines with her parents, my son and his wife. I was able to persuade her parents to name their child Josephine, because of the sense of history it conveys. I would like to thank all the well wishers who have wished me well since my illness.
 
On Monday morning I was rushed into the hospital again with complete heart blockage, pulse rate of 29, and Blood pressure of 80/60.
 
The cardiac team were wonderful and brought me back into reality but at 4-00pm the surgeon operated as it was vital to put a pacemaker into
me as soon as possible.
 
I am glad to say I feel like a new man and would request that you (editor) thank everyone through our gazette . Unfortunately though I am now curtailed in what I can do for the time being and have to
have Lady Ana look after me until this all takes root into my body and I am able to get back to a normal life.

There were at least nine women linked with Rizal; namely Segunda Katigbak, Leonor Valenzuela, Leonor Rivera, Consuelo Ortiga, O-Sei San, Gertrude Beckette, Nelly Boustead, Suzanne Jacoby and Josephine Bracken. These women might have been beguiled by his intelligence, charm and wit.

Segunda Katigbak and Leonor Valenzuela
 Segunda Katigbak was her puppy love. Unfortunately, his first love was engaged to be married to a town mate- Manuel Luz. After his admiration for a short girl in the person of Segunda, then came Leonor Valenzuela, a tall girl from Pagsanjan. Rizal send her love notes written in invisible ink, that could only be deciphered over the warmth of the lamp or candle. He visited her on the eve of his departure to Spain and bade her a last goodbye.

Leonor Rivera
 Leonor Rivera, his sweetheart for 11 years played the greatest influence in keeping him from falling in love with other women during his travel. Unfortunately, Leonor’s mother disapproved of her daughter’s relationship with Rizal, who was then a known filibustero. She hid from Leonor all letters sent to her sweetheart. Leonor believing that Rizal had already forgotten her, sadly consented her to marry the Englishman Henry Kipping, her mother’s choice.

Consuelo Ortiga
 Consuelo Ortiga y Rey, the prettier of Don Pablo Ortiga’s daughters, fell in love with him. He dedicated to her A la Senorita C.O. y R., which became one of his best poems. The Ortiga's residence in Madrid was frequented by Rizal and his compatriots. He probably fell in love with her and Consuelo apparently asked him for romantic verses. He suddenly backed out before the relationship turned into a serious romance, because he wanted to remain loyal to Leonor Rivera and he did not want to destroy his friendship with Eduardo de Lete who was madly in love with Consuelo.

 O Sei San, a Japanese samurai’s daughter taught Rizal the Japanese art of painting known as su-mie. She also helped Rizal improve his knowledge of Japanese language. If Rizal was a man without a patriotic mission, he would have married this lovely and intelligent woman and lived a stable and happy life with her in Japan because Spanish legation there offered him a lucrative job.

Gertrude Beckett
 While Rizal was in London annotating the Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, he boarded in the house of the Beckett family, within walking distance of the British Museum. Gertrude, a blue-eyed and buxom girl was the oldest of the three Beckett daughters. She fell in love with Rizal. Tottie helped him in his painting and sculpture. But Rizal suddenly left London for Paris to avoid Gertrude, who was seriously in love with him. Before leaving London, he was able to finish the group carving of the Beckett sisters. He gave the group carving to Gertrude as a sign of their brief relationship.

Nellie Boustead
 Rizal having lost Leonor Rivera, entertained the thought of courting other ladies. While a guest of the Boustead family at their residence in the resort city of Biarritz, he had befriended the two pretty daughters of his host, Eduardo Boustead. Rizal used to fence with the sisters at the studio of Juan Luna. Antonio Luna, Juan’s brother and also a frequent visitor of the Bousteads, courted Nellie but she was deeply infatuated with Rizal. In a party held by Filipinos in Madrid, a drunken Antonio Luna uttered unsavory remarks against Nellie Boustead. This prompted Rizal to challenge Luna into a duel. Fortunately, Luna apologized to Rizal, thus averting tragedy for the compatriots.

Their love affair unfortunately did not end in marriage. It failed because Rizal refused to be converted to the Protestant faith, as Nellie demanded and Nellie’s mother did not like a physician without enough paying clientele to be a son-in-law. The lovers, however, parted as good friends when Rizal left Europe.

Suzanne Jacoby
 In 1890, Rizal moved to Brussels because of the high cost of living in Paris. In Brussels, he lived in the boarding house of the two Jacoby sisters. In time, they fell deeply in love with each other. Suzanne cried when Rizal left Brussels and wrote him when he was in Madrid.

Josephine Bracken
 In the last days of February 1895, while still in Dapitan, Rizal met an 18-year old petite Irish girl, with bold blue eyes, brown hair and a happy disposition. She was Josephine Bracken, the adopted daughter of George Taufer from Hong Kong, who came to Dapitan to seek Rizal for eye treatment. Rizal was physically attracted to her. His loneliness and boredom must have taken the measure of him and what could be a better diversion that to fall in love again. But the Rizal sisters suspected Josephine as an agent of the friars and they considered her as a threat to Rizal’s security.

Rizal asked Josephine to marry him, but she was not yet ready to make a decision due to her responsibility to the blind Taufer. Since Taufer’s blindness was untreatable, he left for Hon Kong on March 1895. Josephine stayed with Rizal’s family in Manila. Upon her return to Dapitan, Rizal tried to arrange with Father Antonio Obach for their marriage. However, the priest wanted a retraction as a precondition before marrying them. Rizal upon the advice of his family and friends and with Josephine’s consent took her as his wife even without the Church blessings. Josephine later give birth prematurely to a stillborn baby, a result of some incidence, which might have shocked or frightened her.

Why I'm interested in Rizal's writing and so forth? Because he's great philosopher and an advocate of our beloved country. No one living in our country at the current time whose mental awareness could ever surpass his vision to the future that enhance the probability of freedom we lack now. Never!
